My Half Year in Television

by Matthew Thompson

With my focus on E3 here on the site during June, I haven’t posted about TV in a while. Now that the year is half over, I thought I’d take a look at my 2017 in television so far. Five shows stand out from the pack for me from the first half of the year. I’m going to talk a little about each one of them here and then cover some more stuff in the bullets that follow Continue reading

by Matthew Thompson

I’m back with part two of my look at television in 2016. Earlier this week, I spotlighted the best comedies of last year and today I’m talking about some of the incredible dramas that graced the small screen in 2016. Here are my ten favorites from this past year Continue reading

My Half Year in TV and a Look Forward to the Rest of 2015

by Matthew Thompson

Just like I did a week ago for games, I am going to take a look at a couple of my favorite TV shows from the first half of the year as well as talk about what there is to look forward to on television throughout the rest of 2015 Continue reading

TV Show Power Rankings: February 23, 2015

by Matthew Thompson

I’ve been looking to bring back my TV Show Power Rankings that were a staple of this site during early 2014 and starting today I finally will be. In an effort to make them more plentiful, I will be mixing up what I rank from time to time. So one week it may be characters, another I might go with a more negative list. But to kick things back off, I will be talking about the best shows I’m watching at the moment. Just like before this is a “what have you done for me lately” kind of list. So, no lifetime achievement awards here. A great episode can vault you to the top while a bad one or even a couple of weeks off the air could drop you out. Well here they are (these contain mild spoilers for the shows listed) Continue reading

Black Sails Season 2 Premiere (“IX”) Review

by Matthew Thompson

Season 2 of Black Sails opens up right where it should: out on the high seas. But instead of checking in on some of the characters we’d grown familiar with last year, the first scene introduces us to a new one, Captain Ned Low. He and his crew are boarding a neighboring ship whose captain tries his best to reason with Low, but to no avail. Low shows us what he’s about by killing the crew, taking his plunder (including a woman sure to play a crucial role in the season going forward), and lighting the ship afire before sailing to Nassau Continue reading

More Things I Loved on TV in 2014

by Matthew Thompson

Last week I ran through my top ten shows of 2014 (check out Part 1 and Part 2 for yourself!), but that barely scratches the surface of all the great things on television in the past year. So I am here to talk about a bunch more things I loved this year. No real rules for this list other than not hitting any of the same shows I touched on in the top ten. In no particular order, here they are Continue reading

TV Show Power Rankings: March 30, 2014

by Matthew Thompson

I’m back with another set of TV Power Rankings where I check in with what I believe are the five best shows going at the moment. These are very much a “what have you done for me lately” kind of thing, so they put the emphasis on the past month or so while still looking at the season as a whole. A bad week or short hiatus is enough to drop you a few spots while one spectacular episode can give you a boost. With that said here are my latest rankings (Note: The number in parentheses is their rank in the previous rankings. If they were not ranked, I put NR for Not Ranked. If you’d like to see my previous TV Power Rankings they are compiled here. I’ve also added a “Dropped Out” feature at the bottom to explain why some shows from last time didn’t stay in) Continue reading
